Description:

UPDATE: As you probably know, Audio Technica has redesigned the ATH-M50 headphones. The new model is the ATH-M50x and comes with detachable cables. However, if you want to be able to use standard 3.5mm cables with your ATH-M50x, you can't as they use a proprietary connector. It a great connector system, but you can't use standard cables. We have the solution - the AH-M50mkII. We give you the same headphones but use a standard 3.5mm connector that will work with standard or locking 3.5mm cables.

Here's how it works - We remove (and will re-use) the original factory stock cable and install a rugged gold-plated miniplug on the headphone end (standard or locking, your choice). We then install a high quality female jack in the headphones. The jack we use was selected from all of the available connectors because if its reliability and ruggedness. It was the only one small enough that uses miniature coil springs on the internal contacts. Coiled spring loaded contacts are favored over other type of contacts because they don't get loose over time and will offer a reliable connection for years.

The headphones are carefully reassembled and fully tested with the newly modified cable. This modification does not include a new cable - we re-use the factory cable. If you would like an extra factory cable, you can order a coiled one here or a straight one here. If you would like a cable upgrade, we have them here and here.

Why do we offer two connector choices?

The threaded, locking connector makes a secure connection and the cable can not be accidentally pulled out of the headphones. The cable will stay connected to the headphones until you intentionally remove it. This a good choice if you want the ultimate in connector stability and ruggedness.

The non-locking connector is also secure, and has a snug fit into the headphone jack (because of the high quality female jack mentioned above), but if you were to trip or pull on the cable hard enough, it will detach from the headphones without damaging either the cable or the headphones.

Either way, you will be able to use your headphones with the modified cable, or any other standard cable with a 3.5mm (1/8") plug on the end that plugs into the headphones.

The cable modification carries a 2 year warranty on the modification components and labor from The Sound Professionals. However, performing this modification will void the manufacturerÂ’s warranty.

5 out of 5 stars These M50s are RED HOT !!! 09/14/2013
Reviewer: Albert   from Rockland
Well, as you can see Audio Tech has continued into the world of fashion headset with these RED M50s. The difference here is, that these have style, and most of all incredible sound like all the M50s. There are so many headsets on the market, but not to many have the sound quality that the M50s have, and for the price. Keep in mine that in every recording studio I have been to or producer I know, they've used the M50s when recording or producing. Why?... because the M50s reproduce the sound like its meant to me heard. They aren't bass heavy to the point you can't hear the highs or mids. They give you balance! Trusound! Therefore when you hear your music it sounds clear and rich, and free from that muffle ness you get from other headsets and you still get that bass. As a DJ, sound and quality are most important to me, but I am happy you can get some style too. For a long time these have been used as a industry standard and now consumers are taking note. They also have a great track record. Best of all you can get them here with the option of a detachable locking or non-locking cable, I chose the non-locking version with the coil cable. This truly completes them. I also own the white ( really cool) and the silver ones. The black ones are the classic original M50s. They sound better as you use them.

5 out of 5 stars it’s the most exciting thing to come along in year 00/00/0000
Reviewer: Frank Filipetti — GRAMMY®-winning mixer and produc   from USA
Is there anything less glamorous to talk about in the studio than headphones? Ok…apart from mic stands. Well, not any more. In fact, based on the comments of artists I’ve had try the ATH-M50 headphone, it’s the most exciting thing to come along in years. Yeah, I know…tube gear is great, and that new pre you just got is amazing. But think about this…the performance of your artist has a lot more to do with the mix they hear in the headphones than some vintage channel strip you just spent three grand on. Artists who have for years had to tolerate low-quality headphones for high-volume use simply don’t have to compromise anymore. These are fantastic-sounding headphones, period. There just isn’t anything better you can do for your artist than to give them a pair of these
