Description:

Otter Box made the way you want it!

This unit is recommended when you need to use our small microphones in high SPL situations and you want to protect your recorder at the same time. The battery module is built into a series 2000 or series 3000 (choose size with options box) black Otter Box which is made with a fiberglass reinforced ABS resin that is virtually indestructible.

The standard version (with no options selected) will power your microphones with 9 volts of bias power (sometimes called "plug in power"). Most small Electret Condenser microphones will enjoy improved high SPL performance with this higher power, since most portable recorders only provide about 3 volts plug in power at the mic input.

Read this FAQ which explains why you may need a battery module or a mic preamp for your situation.

Add Built-in Microphone option:
You can select to have a set of stereo omnidirectional microphones installed on either side of your battery module, to create an all-in-one "powered stereo microphone". The microphones are built right into the walls of the box, on either side. Should you decide to plug in an external microphone (which you can still do, even if you get this option), the built-in mics are defeated. Note: If you are looking for a "preamplified" microphone, you must add the "preamplifier" option above. Without the preamplifier option, you would have a powered microphone, not a preamplified microphone. We have other "preamplified" microphones here.

Built-in Microphone Specifications:

Low Sensitivity:

  • Signal To Noise Ratio: >58 dB, 1 kHz at 1 Pa
  • Dynamic Range: 91dB
  • Frequency Response: 20 - 20,000 Hz +/- 1dB
  • Open Circuit Sensitivity: -42 dB (5.6 mV) re 1V at 1 Pa
  • Maximum Input Sound Level: 120dB

High Sensitivity:

  • Signal To Noise Ratio: >62 dB, 1 kHz at 1 Pa
  • Dynamic Range: 95dB
  • Frequency Response: 20 - 20,000 Hz +/- 1dB
  • Open Circuit Sensitivity: -35 dB (5.6 mV) re 1V at 1 Pa
  • Maximum Input Sound Level: 113dB

Bass Roll-off option:
You can select an optional selectable bass roll off (bass reduction) filter which provides seven different bass roll-off frequencies to choose from, with independent switches for each channel. The bass roll off is used when the material to be recorded has excessive bass content and allows the user to adjust the bass response of the mic system accordingly. The selectable frequencies are 16Hz (no bass roll off), 69Hz, 95Hz, 107Hz, 160Hz, 195Hz and 888Hz.

Level control option:
You can add an optional output level control which is built into this module and is mounted so that you control the output level of the module from the inside of the box. No part of the control extends out of the box, so the module can be placed in a pocket or bag without the chance of the control changing position inadvertently. The control is accessed by lifting the hinged, locking lid.

This option is most useful with MiniDisc recorders that don't allow adjustment of recording levels while recording (most SONY MD recorders) and with recorders that don't have microphone sensitivity settings (some of the SONY MD recorders).

This optional feature adjusts the output of the microphone signal passing through the module, before going to the recorder. The user simply sets the record level ONCE on the recorder at (or near) full gain and adjusts the recording levels with the output level control at any time during the recording. The actual recording level is still read on the recorder's level meter. NOTE: This option is intended for use with line inputs only. THIS OPTION MUST BE SELECTED IF YOU CHOOSE THE PREAMP OPTION.

This option is available two ways: The single stereo level control is a rotary control that affects both stereo channels equally at the same time. This option is only available with the larger 3000 series box. The dual slider level control has two level controls - one slider control for each channel. This version is great when you want to be able to adjust each stereo channel independently and is available on both size boxes.

Microphone Preamplifier Option:

You can select an optional built-in high quality microphone preamplifier which is built right into the Otter box. Excellent for recorders that have no built in mic preamp or when you want upgraded performance over your recorder's built-in mic preamp.

  • Used to raise microphone signal level to line level
  • Runs 75+ hours on a single 9 volt battery
  • 3 amplifier gain ranges for maximum flexibility:

    • 22dB gain for recording medium sounds (acoustic music, lectures, meetings, rehearsals, etc)
    • 42dB gain for recording quiet sounds (nature sounds, distant talking, soft spoken people, etc)
  • Signal to noise ratio: 115 dBu EIN unweighted
  • Harmonic distortion: 0.06%
  • 106dB dynamic range
