Description:

Notes on sample recordings above: The first samples were made in high school auditorium, with the mics approximately 15 feet apart and 25 feet from the front of the band. Recorder was the Edirol R-09 (original model) line in (16/44.1kHz) with the SP-SPSB-11 battery module. The only post processing was normalizing. The last sample was at large concert using the Edirol R-09HR line in (24/44.1kHz). Recorded from rear stage, sect 114, row 21. Mics mounted in Kangol hat at approx DIN config (7" spread, 110 degrees). Dithered from 24 bit to 16 bit using Adobe Audition/Isotope Ozone. No gain adjustment, EQ, or other processing applied (thanks to Scott P. for this submission!)

The Premium Audio Technica microphones include matched set of Audio Technica U853 microphones. These microphone come with permanently installed high quality, double shielded microphone cables and a new all-metal body. Removable clips and windscreens are included. The standard configuration comes with the two microphone cables terminated together into standard stereo gold plated 1/8" mini plug. The high SPL versions (with XLR phantom plugs or with the AT8531 power modules) come with each mic on separate cable and connector. Custom cable lengths and configurations are available call for details.

Details on the U853:

Maintaining the Audio-Technica tradition of clear and transparent sound quality, the U853A cardioid condenser microphone is ideal for music, speech, theater, orchestra and choir sound reinforcement and recording. The microphones fast transient response and low distortion characteristics allow every complex detail to be heard with all its impact-rich, vibrant qualities faithfully reproduced. Equipped with UniGuard innovations that offer unsurpassed immunity from radio frequency interference, the U853A accepts interchangeable elements, available in cardioid, hypercardioid, omnidirectional and UniLine line cardioid (mini shotgun) polar patterns.

    - Designed for concert recording, suspension over choirs, instrumental groups and theater stages
    - Includes one pair of rotating clips (SH-LAV-CLIP)
    - Includes one pair of standard windscreens (SP-PREM-WS)
    - Superior off-axis rejection for maximum gain before feedback
    - UniGuard RFI-shielding technology offers outstanding rejection of radio frequency interference (RFI)
    - Smooth off-axis frequency response
    - Accepts interchangeable elements to permit angle of acceptance from 90 degrees to 360 degrees
    - Low-profile design with low-reflectance finish for minimum visibility
    - Operates on "plug in power", microphone battery power supply or phantom power (with adapters see details below)

Powering Options:

There are several ways to power these microphones. Each of these options provides the same sound quality, the only difference is the maximum sound pressure level (SPL) the mics can handle.

1-The microphones can be powered with normal "plug-in-power", available on many portable recorders and camcorders. With this type of power, the mics will handle reasonable sound levels. If you will be using the mics in high SPL (sound pressure level) situations, the microphones require additional power, beyond the normal "plug in power". You will need to use one of the powering schemes described below:

2-For strong sound levels, consistent with loud amplified concerts, you can add battery module for increased high SPL performance and dynamic range. You can select the battery module shown above in the option box, or choose one of the many other types that are available on this page if you prefer. We also recommend that you add the "Low sensitivity" modification as an option (details on this option here).

3-However, if your recorder/mixer, etc. supplies phantom power, you can add the high SPL modified XLR connector option. Each mic has it's own XLR connector and cable and microphones ordered this way will not work with "plug in power" or standard battery module as shown above.

4-For intensely loud situations, consistent with highly amplified concerts at close distances to the speakers, you can add set of Ultra high SPL power modules (AT8538 or AT8531) with locking connectors between the mics and the power modules. In this configuration, the mics remain balanced. With the AT8538 modules, the microphones will plug into device (mixer, mic preamp, recorder, etc) that supplies 9-52v phantom power. With the AT8531, the microphones will run on each modules standard AA battery or 9-52v phantom power. This configuration provides the highest level of SPL capability. The output of the modules are XLRM plugs. To connect the portable recorder with miniplug input, select this cable.

Lastly, if you wish to use the mics with plug in power and phantom power (alternately), order the mics as shown in option "1" above and order this cable with the phantom power option.

5 out of 5 stars AT853 Mics, Acoustic live/studio. 00/00/0000
Reviewer: A viewer   from Williamstown, MA USA
I do a bunch of acoustic recording which ends up cut to CD. The sound is utterly faithful, so if the session actually sounded good, the CD does as well. I've used my set for 2 years now. For acoustic work, the battery module is not needed (I bought one, tried it, sent it back, no problem). For percusson it might be useful. I've just ordered another set as a gift. While they are painfully expensive, they have better noise & s/n numbers than the more expensive slimline units, and the difference from an ordinary inexpensive microphone is clearly audible. I'm not sure if the difference from the AT831s is as noticable, as I have not compared the two directly. I'm not sure why the cords have been shortened - my set has 6ft cords, and the 4 foot cords will be more limiting (even with an extension they will limit the maximum mic separation). Note from SP: We shortened the mic cables because many of our customers seem to prefer the shorter cables. We can make them any length (up to 25') that is required. Call for details.

5 out of 5 stars Great stealth, great sound 00/00/0000

I have recorded using these mics in both a very small club setting (12th Street Tavern, Denver) recording acoustic music and medium to large auditoriums (Filmore Auditorium and Pepsi Center, Denver) recording loud rock concerts. They performed great for me in both situations. If you are recording relatively quiet performances in small venues, the mics do fine alone. But if you are recording high-volume performances definitely get a mic power supply as well. My Sony PCM-M100 DAT mic power supply did not provide enough power to the mics at one performance (moe at the Filmore) and I got a bass-heavy distorted recording even though my levels looked okay on the DAT. I bought a power supply for my mics and recorded another loud show and it came out beautifully with no overload. I "lost" one pair of these mics and ordered another since I was so satisfied with the first pair.

5 out of 5 stars High quality recordings 00/00/0000
Reviewer: Mike Duffin   (mike@duffin.de) from Detmold, Germany
I purchased a pair of SP-CMC-4 sub-cardoid mics for use with a Sony mini-disc portble recorder some weeks ago. I have since used the mics in a variety of recording situations: diverse chamber music concerts, symphony orchestra, symphony orchestra with large choir (Orff, Carmina Burana!!). I have done some "stealthy" recording, but most recordings have been made with the mics mounted about 8 foot up on a mic-stand. I am astonished at the versatility of these microphones. The sound quality is excellent and the noise levels are so low, that I'm starting to appreciate how noisy Sony MicPreamps are...... (my next purchase of a preamp is therefore in planning....). The tonal balance is excellent, with no audible coloring of the scource material. I wasn't at all sure, which mics I really needed for the variety of jobs I use them for. Chris Carfagno provided first class service up front and made the decision easier (and cheaper!) than I had been planning. Great advice Chris, thank you very much.

these mics are amazing! 00/00/0000
Reviewer: Ben Garland   from Atlanta, GA
i've had these mics for a few months now. i've used them to record mainly rock shows at clubs in atlanta and athens georgia. i pair them up with the premium t-mount and the preamp/power/filter/levels box that they also sell here at sp. it all goes into a sony minidisc recorder. the sound is FANTASTIC. i would have never imagined that such full sound could come from such small mics. my recordings sound a lot better than many "professional" bootlegs i have heard, and the bands really appreciate that i am documenting their shows. here are some of the bands i have recorded: Mates of State, Frank Black, Cat Power, The Flaming Lips, Plus/Minus, Maserati, and Stephen Malkmus. these mics capture the sound true to the live experience i remember (sometimes better, since i shoot them up on my 8 foot stand). don't spend more! get these mics!

5 out of 5 stars Just received'em, first impressions... 00/00/0000
Reviewer: Romain   (Romain.Valent@wanadoo.fr) from Toulouse, France
I just received my pair of SP-CMC-4 cardiod mics. Unfortunatly, i won't be able to try them on a live rock session until the 18th of October ( Placebo coming in Paris Bercy ! ). But yesterday, i tried something. I plugged the mics in my SP-SPSB-6 with a bass roll-off level set at 107Hz, the whole plugged in my Sony MZ-N910 MD recorder. I put Placebo's last CD with the 1st track " Bulletproof cupid " which is quite heavy playing at a very high level on my Denon stereo, and recorded it placing the mics just in front of the boomer of my Jmlabs... The result was astonishing... It was nearly as good as the original recording while listening back to the home-made one !!! I recommend those mics, but i'll give you further impressions on October !
